- Littlehampton, 30/06/2023: St Winefride’s Residential Home opened its doors to families and members of the local community in Littlehampton this week, with Ice Cream van, live entertainment and refreshments
St Winefride’s Residential Home was one of over 4,000 care homes across the UK participating in Care Home Open Week from 26th June to 2nd July 2023.
Led by Championing Social Care, a volunteer-led group of leaders from across the social care sector, this year’s campaign also included the inaugural ‘Great British Care Cycle Relay’ which travelled from the North to the South, visiting care homes along the way that are at the heart of each community across the country.
This year’s event received record engagement from MPs, with one in five MPs attending a local care home during the week, including Damian Green, Member of Parliament for Ashford and Chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Adult Social Care, Helen Whatley, Member of Parliament for Faversham and Mid Kent and Minister for Social Care, and Angela Rayner, Member of Parliament for Ashton-under-Lyne and Deputy Leader of the Labour Party.
Niharika Noakes, Championing Social Care Director said:
“We’re very proud of the incredible level of engagement we’ve seen this year from MPs, care homes and their residents and families. Care Home Open Week is an important opportunity for us to deliver positive stories and initiatives about the sector that we care for so passionately, which all too often go under the radar. We’re particularly grateful to our partners, including Virgin Money, Civitas Investment Management, and Christie & Co, who have made this week possible.”
Last year, 80% of the care homes who participated in Care Home Open Week agreed that the event helped promote their facilities, activities and services. 68% of the participating care homes also agreed that the event encouraged greater community engagement and volunteering.
About Championing Social Care
Care Home Open Week is organised by Championing Social Care, a volunteer-led organisation that aims to shine a light on the social care sector, and is sponsored by Civitas Investment Management (https://www.civitasim.com/) and Virgin Money (https://uk.virginmoney.com/).
We are a volunteer-led group of leaders from across the social care sector. Our vision is to ensure a wider and deeper public understanding, appreciation and respect for social care. We do not seek to represent the care sector or care workers. Rather, we are focused on delivering positive stories and initiatives about the sector that we care for so passionately.
